Few parents believe their own teens are drinking alcohol (10%) or using marijuana (5%). Parents’ perceptions fall below teens’ own reported use (52% for alcohol; 28% for marijuana). Many parents of teens overestimate marijuana and alcohol use by teens nationally.

Drug abuse and childhood obesity are the top health concerns for kids, rated by 33% of adults as big problems. Top 10 health concerns include risks associated with children’s use of technology, including internet safety and sexting. Top health concerns for kids are dramatically different in the eyes of white, black and Hispanic adults.

In the U.S., 11% of adults and 5% of children have participated in medical research. 84% of parents are unaware of medical research opportunities for children. Income, not race/ethnicity, is related to participation and awareness about medical research opportunities for kids. 

41% of parents have taken their children to a water park in the past year. Only 26% of parents think it’s very important to shower before getting in the water. 28% of parents believe that preventing infections is the sole responsibility of water park staff.
