Pacifiers, blankies, and iPads? Screen time for young kids
In today’s digital world, it seems like there are screens almost everywhere. Between TVs, smartphones, tablets, and laptops, many adults spend a large portion of their day staring at a screen. Sometimes, kids do too – which may lead to later problems like obesity, trouble sleeping, and behavioral issues. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their guidelines for entertainment screen time for kids in 2013, saying kids under age two shouldn’t have any entertainment screen time and older children should have no more than two hours per day of screen time.
But anyone who has spent time with a toddler recently knows how interesting screens are for young kids – which may be why many parents allow their kids to play games on their smartphones or tablets to occupy their attention and get a needed break.
To better understand parents’ attitudes about screen time for children, we asked parents in the National Poll on Children’s Health about how much screen time their children have each day and where in the home they use screens most often. We also asked parents about rules or strategies they’ve tried to limit their kids’ entertainment screen time.
