When can tweens stay home alone?

Now that school is out for the summer, parents must make daytime arrangements for their children. Many parents will face the question of whether to have their child stay home alone for some or all of the day. This can be an especially challenging decision for parents of tweens – children ages 9-12, who may think they are too old for a babysitter but who still require some supervision.

There’s no hard and fast rule about what age is the right age for tweens to start staying home alone, so we asked parents of children ages 9-12 what they think. We also asked how much confidence they have in their own tweens’ ability to follow simple safety practices when home alone.

The results of this new National Poll on Children’s Health will be published next week. Sign up for our email list to make sure you get the report as soon as it’s available.
